Arts Horizons, New Jerseys leading non-profit arts-in-education provider, will sponsor a free performance of The War of the Worlds: A Stated Radio Play, presented by Raconteur Radio, at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters on Wednesday, November 5, at 7 p.m.

Library Headquarters is located at 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan 07726.

Set in Grover Mills, NJ, the play is a loose adaptation of the classic H. G. Wells' novel, and begins as a musical performance intermittently interrupted by news flashes about strange explosions on Mars and the landing of a hostile alien spacecraft on Earth. Originally narrated by broadcast bad boy Orson Welles, this provocative program first unsettled radio listeners on Oct. 30 1938, when the simulated bulletins suggested to many contemporaneous listeners that an actual alien invasion was currently in progress.

The performance will feature period costumes, theatrical lighting, vintage commercials, Golden Age radio equipment and hundreds of sound effects. The production stars Michael Jarmus, Thom Boyer, Laurence Mintz, and Alex Dawson from Raconteur Radio, a Metuchen-based theatre company dedicated to reviving and animating communities through cultural programming.

This inter-generational program for children, adults, and seniors of all ages is part of Arts Horizons "Creative Spirits" program which provides older adults with participatory, hands-on social and creative engagement in the performing, literary and visual arts in senior centers, assisted and independent living facilities and nursing homes throughout the tri-state area.

This program is generously funded by the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey and the Wallerstein Foundation for Geriatric Life Improvement.
