Assembly Description


Dressed in dynamic authentic garments The Anja Dance Company introduces students to the beauty and vibrancy of Indian dance and culture. The program exposes students to each geographic region and subculture which has developed unique dance styles based on local traditions;  Bhangra from North India, Bharatanatyam from South India, Garba from Gujarat and Bollywood from Mumbai. The audience will also learn a few elements of India’s array of dances which are divided into three styles: Classical, Folk and Bollywood.

About the Artist 

Minila Shah, Founder & Director Minila is extensively trained in the classical Indian dance forms of Bharatanatyam and Kathak. She has used her strong base in classical dance to explore a variety of dance styles including Bollywood, Bhangra, and Gujarati folk dance. The experience she gained traveling the world to further her art coupled with her experience working as the Artistic Director of Bollywood Grooves Dance

Company in London, UK has made Minilla an expert in many different forms of Indian dance. In addition, Minila has worked in film, television and theater. Minila was responsible for choreographing the routine, set to A. R. Rahman’s hit Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire, which helped Hayley Tamaddon win the “Dancing on Ice” crown. Her passion and expertise empowered her to found Ajna upon relocating to NYC in 2011.

Since then, she has developed, trained and managed Ajna’s instructors and professional ensemble. Her passion combined with her dance expertise and teaching abilities are what set her apart as an artist and instructor.
