Assembly Description


An energetic rapper/beatboxer (vocal percussionist), skilled D.J. / bassist, and two top notch dancers interact with students to teach the history of Hip-Hop and its many elements. Students are introduced to the DJ, the Didgeridoo, Beatbox and improvised rap, rhythm and breakdancing. Students learn valuable life lessons and see firsthand how the world of Hip-Hop can be a positive and uplifting experience.

About the Artists


Baba Israel was raised in New York by parents who were core members of the Living Theatre. He developed as a young artist exploring spoken word, Hip Hop, and experimental performance. He lived and worked in Australia working on major community theatre projects, Hip Hop festivals and co-founded the group Meta Bass 'n Breath. He has toured as an emcee, beatboxer, and theatre artist across North and South America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. He is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Playback NYC Theatre Company which brought theatre to prisons, hospitals, shelters, and arts venues. As an educator he has worked internationally developing projects with a young people centered focus. He holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary arts from Goddard in the United States. He became Artistic Director/CEO of Contact in 2009, after several years of performing and leading workshops at the venue as a visiting artist. He has returned to New York to develop projects in theatre, music, and education.

Yako Prodis was born into a family of artists. A fan of Hip Hop Culture since his childhood, Yako got serious about graffiti, beatboxing and beat making in the mid 1990’s building his style with local artists in his home city of New Haven, CT. Yako is a multi-instrumentalist, DJ, and human beat boxer. Privately trained in piano since age six, he is now proficient on drum-set, guitar and has integrated bucket drumming into his work. As a bassist, Yako has toured the United States with artists that include: DJ Logic, Black Rebels, and Senegalese Kora player Youssou Sidibe. He is currently the musician for the improv theatre group, Playback NYC. Yako is also a teaching artist in public schools and afterschool programs. He has led workshops in music production, percussion and graffiti art.
